Descendants of William Pyne

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 PYNE was born Bet. 1570 - 1585 in Woodbury, Devonshire, England, and died Abt. 1636 in Exeter, Devonshire, England. He married MARY. She was born Abt. 1590 in Devonshire, England, and died Abt. 1640 in Devonshire, England.

Notes for WILLIAM PYNE:
William died in 1636, leaving considerable property, consisting mostly of horses, cattle and sheep, form which it is to be inferred that he was a yeoman farmer.

Child of WILLIAM PYNE and MARY is:
2. i. JAMES2 PYNE, b. June 04, 1608, Exeter, Devonshire, England; d. Abt. 1660, Hempstead, Long Island, NY.

Generation No. 2

Notes for James Pine:
Although James was an almost unknown given name throughout England up to and including the sixteenth century, the beginning of the reign of King James I of England in 1603 sparked a sudden surge of males named James. James I, King of England (b. 1566 d. 1625) had already been James VI, King of Scots from 1567 (via regents). Becoming the first Stuart King of England in 1603, he reigned until 1625 over England and Scotland combined. James Pyne, who was christened on 6/4/1608 in Woodbury (near Exeter), Devonshire, England would likely have been among the earliest English possessors of this given name.
The prelude to the English Civil war, with its religious undercurrent of Episcopacy vs. Presbyterianism, was occurring at about the time James Pyne migrated to America in 1640 from Devonshire, England. Episcopacy was abolished in Scotland in 1639, and until Cromwell defeated the Royalists in 1646 it remained so. Cromwell's victory in 1646 restored Presbyterianism there, and in England, in 1647. Though the war didn't begin until 1642, armed conflict and/or political or religious turmoil may have been the cause of James Pyne's emigration.
James settled in Stamford, CT. He then removed to Hempstead, L.I. in 1644. By 1653 certain Hempstead documents began spelling his surname Pine, and each of the eleven children of he and Susan Armitage carried the Pine spelling forward. His last will and testament at Hempstead, L.I., NY bequeaths several ecclesiastical texts of decidedly Puritan sentiments.
James Pine was one of the early settlers of Hempstead, L.I. He was not one of the first 50 proprietors but was an early settler. The first book of town records was lost. The second books begins with 1654. His name first appears in 1657 but there is other evidence that he may have been there as early as 1647. His will was dated 21 January 1684/5 and proved at Jamaica 13 October 1686.

NOTE:WLT
Some people have James Sr and Jr as one and the same with children from 2 marriages. I am not sure.

Jonathan moved from Hempstead to Cape May, NJ. As a resident of Cape May he sold in 1690-2 the Hempstead lands left to him by his father (Queens County Deeds A:99, and HTR8:255, 140).
A book of Cape May published by the Albert Ward Co., Cape May, 1937 says: "There was a permanent settlement prior to 1685 and there can be no doubt at this time it was an organized settlement for records show that the Legislature appointed, in that year, Caleb Carman a justice of the peace and Jonathan Pine, constable."

Also an IGI record

Notes for BENJAMIN C. PINE:

Benjamin owned land on the easterly side of the road leading to Chews Landing.

Russell Pine found a document which stated that Benjamin and Hannah are buried just North of the Friends Burial Ground in Rancocas, NJ. The plot overlooks the Rancocas river. Benjamin and Hannah were apparently not allowed to be buried in the cemetery because they were not Quakers. We suspect that Hannah was a Quaker until she married Benjamin who was probably not a Quaker; this is probably why they got married in Philadelphia at Christ Episcopal Church.

Benjamin's parents are not known. Our best guess is that his parents were Jonathan Pine, Jr. and Phebe, however, this is not confirmed.

1 iii. Bushrod S. Pyne, born 1813 in Berryville, Virginia; died February 18, 1852 in Harper's Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia; married Adaline Elizabeth Snook December 12, 1839 in Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
iv. Marshall B. Pine, born 1822 in Berryville, Virginia; died Aft. 1860 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri (?); married Margarette Unknown; born Abt. 1830 in Virginia.

Notes for Marshall B. Pine:
According to oral tradition, a branch of the Pine family of Harper's Ferry moved to the St. Joseph Missouri area. An "M. B. Pine", who was born in Virginia, is recorded in the 1860 Census for Washington Township, Buchanan County (St. Joseph area), Missouri. This is assumed to be the same Marshall Pine listed in 1850 in Harper's Ferry, Virginia. His wife was supposed to be "Mittie" according to the oral information. The 1860 Census lists a "Margarette" in his household.

v. Susan C. Pyne, born Bet. 1823 - 1830 in Berryville, Virginia?; died May 10, 1867 in Warm Springs, Bath Co., Virginia; married Col. William W. Shields September 04, 1852 in Augusta County, Virginia; born Abt. 1805 in Virginia; died Aft. 1883 in Greenbrier County, WV.

Notes for Susan C. Pyne:
There is confusion about her date of birth. According to her death record, she was age 37 at death in 1867 of apoplexy, meaning that she was born in 1830. In contrast, the 1860 census lists her as age 37, making her birth date 1823. She taught school at Ann Smith Academy between 1838 and 1845; this argues for the earlier birth date. If born in 1823, she would have been about 44 at her death. Moved to Warm Springs after her marriage. Second wife of William Shields.

Notes for Col. William W. Shields:
According to Pyne family legend, he was keeper of the Springs at Warm Springs.
This is not supported by documentation, His occupation in 1856 is listed as Tanner.

Descendants of Jonathan Pine

Generation No. 1

1. Jonathan1 Pine

Children of Jonathan Pine are:
+ 2 i. Lazarus2 Pine, born 1715 in IN NJ; died 1796.
3 ii. Benjamin Pine, born March 10, 1716/17 in IN NJ.

Notes for Benjamin Pine:

I found the name and dates for Benjamin in LDS IGI files.

Generation No. 2

2. Lazarus2 Pine (Jonathan1) was born 1715 in IN NJ, and died 1796. He married Mary Wood.

Notes for Lazarus Pine:

I received an email from Bill Pine on 6-21-1999 that said as follows:
This family first settled in Lawrence County in 1820 and descended from John Pine(1790-1861). John Pine was the son of Lazarus Pine and Mary Wood and Lazarus was the son of Jonathan Pine of Cape May, NJ.

The story goes that Lazarus Pine received some land in Bedford County, PA for his service in the Revolutionary War and it was in Bedford County that John Pine was born. He was one of the first to settle in Lawrence County and Pine Creek is named after him.

I have been trying to find a link between the descendants of Lazarus Pine and the descendants of Nicholas Pyne born abt 1677 mogely, County cork, Ireland.

Nicholas had a son named Richard born 1705 Braintree, Esses, Ireland married Isabella Stokes and had a son named John Henry Richard Pyne born 1729.
john henry had a son named Robert Pyne born 1765 in Ireland who died 1849 in Monroe, WV and his son James McGuire Pyne had descendants in Lawrence Co.,OH at about same time Lazarus' descendants were there.

There was also a James Alexander Pine born 1750 died 1803 married to Mary Gatliff in Monroe, WV He might have been a brother of Robert.

Hello, Wanda. Your note comes as a complete surprise to me. While researching the Flaningam/Flanningham history I came across several mentions of Lazarus Pine in microfilmed records of Gloucester County. I know that he is supposed to have married Deborah Flaningam, but found no mention of her in the records. He is mentioned several times as having occupied various offices in The county, but do not remember copying them. I got the impression from the minimal records I found that he had died at a relatively young age, maybe aged 30s or 40s? My complete mention of Deborah and Lazarus is:

"No New Jersey marriage record exists for Deborah. CURTZ says that she married Lazarus Pine and had no children. Lazarus Pine was active in the affairs of Gloucester County and is mentioned a number of times in documents of the time, but no mention of his wife has been found."

Henry CURTZ gave an affidavit on the Jennings Family (including the Flaningams) in the early to mid 1800s. I looked for my copy just now, but was not able to find it.

I would be happy to correspond with you, particularly if you have information on the Flaningam family in the early 1700s. There is still much I have no information on in the 1700 to 1750 time period. I can send you a copy of the introduction and first 20-30 pages which comprise the colonial period in the book, if you are interested.

The person you need to speak with is Ora Flaningam. His e-mail Address is He's a delightful gentleman who has done a very comprehensive genealogy of his family that was also published by the Gloucester County Historical Society. e Family

From the notes of Thomas A. Pine sent to me by Diane DeCenso on 7-26-1999.

James Pine is shown in the IGI microfiche records of the Genealogical Library of the Mormon Church, New Canaan Branch, under Ohio--Pine as having married Mrs. Lavonia Beckett in Lawrence County, OH on March 6, 1853. She had lst married James Beckett on 10-30-1845. The 1870 census of Windsor Twp., Lawrence County, OH shows on pg. 7, family #46, James Pine(age 39) and his wife Lavonia (age 41), as well as 7 children including Lewis age 6.

The Lawrence County Ohio Probate Court marriage records from 1817 to 1857 on page 23 shows that Lavonia Beckett and James Pine were married on 6/Mar/1853 by C. M. Singer, Justice of The Peace.

The material collected by Nettie Pine Wallace in 1914 states that "James Pine had several sons and daughters: Mitt(Believe 'Milt' for James Milton, listed as Milton in the 1880 census of Lawrence County....e.g., James Milton), Louise (believe misread for Louis or properly spelled Lewis ...e.g., Lewis Preston), Mary ...'

James Pine is buried in the family plot at Pine Grove Cemetery in Windsor Township, Lawrence County ,OH. The land for Pine Grove Church and Cemetery was given by his parents John and Mary (Beckett)Pine. The gravestone for James Pine does not list birth and death dates. It is a Civil War Veteran 'Memorial Stone' which only says "Jas. Pine, CO A 173rd Ohio Infantry.

When James Pine died, his farm of some 200 or so acres appears to have been divided between two of his four sone(James Milton and Lewis Preston). His oldest son, John Thomas, already seems to have received a homesite before the 1880 census, and in 1900'scensus, the three oldest sons (John Thomas, James Milton, and Lewis Preston are living with their families on adjacent farms in the same locale as their father's farm. The youngest of James Pine's four sons, Edward Creighton, seems to have moved to Cabell County, WV and begun work for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad after his marriage in 1892. By the 1910 census, John Thomas had also moved to Cabell County,WV and had become a building contractor(presumably first selling his Lawrence County, OH farm.) Around 1910, also, Lewis Preston began work at the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in Cabell Co.,WV, but he retained the Lawrence County farm and his family remained there until around 1915. Lewis Prestondied in 1917 and his wife sold the Lawrence County farm in 1919. Only James Milton seems to have kept his portion of the original farm, and his son Harry D. seems to have inherited it. The 1920 census of Lawrence County, OH shows him owning it.

On Jan 4, 1994 I received an interim report from Martha Kounse of Chesapeke, OH who was then engaged by me to do some research in the Lawrence County area. Her report included a copy of a Lawrence County 'Graves Registration Card' which gave much information on James Pine, including his Civil War Record, his date of birth, and the cemetery & plot location. All this served to prove that he was James Pin(RIN#21) who was the husband of Lavonia Floyd. His death date was listed as May 31, 1898 and his place of death Rome Township, Lawrence County,OH.

On 5 Aug 1994 I received a copy of the Civil War pension file of James Pine and his wife Livonia Pine. It was located under certificate #472602 at the National Archives, and it confirms the information I already had about him.

Notes for Livonia (Laura) Floyd:

LIVONIA FLOYD

According to Esther Ruth Schuck, wife of a grandson of this individual, Livonia commonly went by the name of 'Laura" when he(the grandson) was a boy. He (Ira Coleman Pine) was born Feb/1893 and this individual, his grandmother died Mar/1900, when he was age seven.

According to material compiled by Nettie Pine Wallace Pierce in 1914(copy in my files) , Lavonia Beckett commonly went by the name Laura.

The International Genealogical Index shows the marriage of a Savonia Floyd to James Beckett in Lawrence County, OH on 30 OCT 1845. The census records of Lawrence County,OH in 1850 show Lavonia Beckett without a husband, and 'Laura" had a daughter prior to her subsequent marriage to James Pine. This daughter is shown with various given name spellings in the Lawrence County OH censuses of 1850, 1860, & 1870 .....as follows:
1850, in Union Twp, Lutecea Beckett--age1, under Lavonia Beckett in family #98(pg. 386 of Joseph and Henrietta Beckett(ages 51 & 50)

1860, in Windsor Twp, Linccetta R. --age 11, under Lavonia Pine in family #117(pg. 149) of James and Livonia Pine

1870, in Windsor Twp, Lusetta Beckett--age 21, in household of Mary Pine--age 76, family #47(pg. 591) living next door to the family of James and Lavonia Pine.

The IGI microfiche shows the births of Craton(Creighton) and an Aphelia(Ophelia) Pine with birth dates corresponding to the youngest 2 children of James and Livonia Pine(Ophelia and Edward Creighton) on page 33,007(source: batch 0514526, serial sheets 4982 and 1787), listing the mother as the wife of James Pine, but showing her as 'Jemina' Floyd in the first instance and 'Livonia' Floyd in the second. Thus, it seems clear that Lavonia was not a Beckett at all, and was initially a Floyd who married a son of Josiah and Henrietta (King) Beckett, had a daughter by him, and then lost him somehow and continued living with her in-laws until her subsequent marriage to James Pine on 6/Mar/1853. In fact, the IGI lists the marriage of 'Savonia' Beckett to James Pine on that date. I'm convinced that the person who transcribed the handwritten record of marriages thought the first letter of Lavonia's first name was an 'S' instead of an 'L', not at all an uncommon misreading.

Josiah Beckett, who married Henrietta King, was a brother of Mary 'Polly' Beckett who married John Pine. He had a son James, and was living in Lawrence County Oh at the time John & Mary Pine returned there in 1849. It is very plausible that John and Mary's son James Pine would have married, in 1853, the young widow of Mary(Beckett) Pine's nephew.

On May 16, 1994 Mrs. Martha Kounse, who had been doing some genealogical research for me in Lawrence Co.,OH, sent me a copy of an article from the Ironton Register of Thursday, January 12, 1899 which states:
"Livonia Pine, of Athalia, gets an pension". Thus, I have changed the spelling of her given name from Lavonia to Livonia. The name was often recorded as 'Lavonia' in earlier records, but this latter-day 'official' record, plus the fact that her oldest son, John Thomas Pine named his oldest daughter 'Livonia' in 1883, persuades me that Livonia is the preferred and proper spelling, and that the earlieer spellings were based on misconceptions by various transcribers.

On 5Aug1994 I received from the National Archives a copy of the Civil War Pension file of James Pine, which was apparently granted to him on or about 11Apr1891, and which was apparently then redirected to his wife, Livonia Pine on or about 28Jul1898, upon the death of JamesPine on 31May1898. This file was under certificate #472602 at the National Archives. It includes much confirming information, including Livonia's first marriage to James Beckett and subsequent marriage to James Pine on March 6, 1853. It also gives the residence of Livonia Pine as Rome Township, Lawrence County, OH as of 28Jul1898 when she signed for the redirection of the pension to her, and it gives her date of death as 4Mar 1900. Although her place of death was not recorded on the form that showed her date of death, it is clear that she never remarried and thus died under the name From the notes of Thomas A. Pine sent to me by Diane DeCenso
Livonia Pine, and that she was apparently residing in Rome Township of Lawrence County up until her death.

It is further, almost certain that she was buried in the Pine family plot at Pine Grove Cemetery in Windsor Township, Lawrence County, OH(on Slate Run Road), where gravestones of her husband and at least one of hersons, John Thomas Pine may be found. No marker was visible, however, on a visit to this cemetery in 1992.

Later information confirms that Livonia Beckett was the daughter of Thomas and Drucilla/Druzilla Floyd of Lawrence County Oh, and that she first had married James Beckett, son of Josiah and Henrietta(King) Beckett and a nephew of Mary 'Polly' (Beckett) Pine, mother of James Pine. James Beckett and Livonia Floyd had a daughter named Lucetta, born in 1849. Livonia(Floyd) Beckett subsequently married James Pine, son of John and Mary (Beckett) Pine.

Notes for Welshian Pine:

WELSHIAN PINE
Welshian is shown as 1/12 year old in the family of James and Livonia Pine in Windsor Twp, Lawrence Co.,OH in 1860 census. She apparently died young, as she didn't appear in 1870 census. Because of the birth dates being the same, she was a twin of James Milton Pine.

Notes for John Thomas Pine:

JOHN THOMAS PINE is a brother of Lewis Preston Pine, and he wrote in 1939, at age 85, to W.A. Riffe of Beckley WV about his grandfather, John Pine, having started off walking to join General Jackson in 1912 to fight against Patchingham in New Orleans(copy of letter in my files). He says his grandfather learned, before he got to New Orleans, that the fighting there was over, so he turned around and headed home.
From the notes of Thomas A. Pine sent to me by Diane DeCenso
Lawrence County, OH birth records list several children born to John T. Pine and wife Sarah E. Perego.

His gravestone exists at the Pine Grove Cemetery on Slate Run Road in Windsor Township, Lawrence County, OH. This cemetery is adjacent to the church which his grandparents, John and Mary(Beckett) Pine gave the land for in 1858. His gravestone gives birth & death dates.

The Ironton Register of 17/Aug/1905 has the following article:

"John Pine, the bigsaw mill man of Cebee, was here Saturday and informed us that he was going to leave the state. Mr. Pine has sold his saw mill, grist mill, and stave factory to Walter Calhoun of West Virginia, who will take charge of it in the next few days. Mr. Pine will move to Huntington and engage in the grocery business on Eighth Avenue and 23rd Street. We wish him well in his new venture."

Diane DeCenso gives Sarahs maiden name as Munsell.

Notes for Lewis Preston Pine:

LEWIS PRESTON
Born in Lawrence County, OH --on April 8, 1864, his marriage to 'Flota' Fuller is recorded with his name misspelled Louis P. Pine and is dated January 1, 1891. He is listed as being more than 21 and Flota is listed as being more than 18. The marriage is shown as being performed in Lawrence County, OH by Judge Lot Davis, witnessed by James Pine and their marriage was recorded by George W. Johnson, Elder. The marriage record is on page 429 of volume 15 of the Lawrence County, OH marriage records (from micofilm of GS #0317721 available from the Genealogical Library of Mormon Church, New Canaan Branch).

In volume 16 of the same microfilm on page 127 is the record of the marriage of Edward C. Pine to Alice Runyan on November 13, 1892. The Witness is again listed as James Pine and in this case, since Edward is listed as being under age 21, consent was given by James Pine, "father of Edward C." Edward Creighton Pine & Lewis Preston Pine were both sons of James Pine.

The microfilm file of Ohio in the same LDS F/H Library shows under Pine a marriage record in Lawrence County, OH of James Pine & Savonia Beckett dated March 6, 1853; presumable the parents of Lewis Preston and Edward C. Pine. Should be Lavonia Beckett

Marriage and birth info in IGI records exists for Effie Dell Pine born 5-25-1903 Wolf Crk, Lawrence Co., OH and married Gilbert Bryan Lafon 7-21-1920 Lawrence Co.,OH

58. Livona Rebecca7 Pine (John Thomas6, James5, John4, John Alexander3, Lazarus2, Jonathan1) was born September 15, 1883 in Lawrence Co.,OH. She married (1) Anah Decatur Taylor, son of William Taylor and Sarah Martin. He was born June 25, 1880 in Virginia. married June 21, 1903 in Lawrence Co.,OH, son of William Taylor and Sarah Martin.
Notes for Anah Decatur Taylor:

1910 census, Lawrence Co.,OH, Windsor Twp
Taylor, Anah D. age 30 born in VA
Livona R. age 26 born OH
Inez E. afe 5 born OH
Elsie I age 3 born OH
William L. age 6 mos. born OH

During a phone conversation with Virginia whitehead, wife of Tom(grandson of Anah), she said her mother-in-law, Inez Taylor, told her Anah was so small when they came to Ohio that he had to ride in the wagon on a pillow.

I checked dates and Anah would havebeen about 5 or 6 years old. His brother Charles would have been about 2 or 3 and his sister Anna was a baby. They probably ALL had to ride on pillows!
This is based on the fact that the next sibling to be born, Ethel, was born in 1887 in Ohio, according to census, and Anah, Charles and Anna were born in VA.

I can't imagine moving across the mountains of Virginia to Ohio with 3 children under 6 and giving birth to a new baby within the year that I arrived. Sarah may have even been pregnant on the trip.

marriage record says that Anah was 24 born in Giles Co.,VA and resided in Lawrence Co., son of W.J. Taylor and Sallie Martin and Livonia was 18 daughter of John Pine and Sarah Perego born and resided in Lawrence Co.,OH
